In 1916, Margaret Sanger opened an illegal clinic to challenge the New York State law. This resulted in Margaret being arrested and jailed for 30 days (1 month).  But Margaret appealed the case and won. So, in 1918, the NY Court of Appeals said that a licensed physician could give contraceptives and contraceptive information as long as it was to cure or prevent a disease.

What Took Place

Over the years, 10,000 women were cared for at the Margaret Sanger Clinic. The building that the clinic took place in was built in 1847 as part of a row of Greek revival buildings. The women were not only given effective contraceptives but the clinic provided training for doctors and nurses, created instructional literature, and had great patient experiences.

About The Clinic

The Margaret Sanger Clinic was the first women’s health clinic to legally give out birth control in the United States. The clinic was opened on January 2, 1923. In April 1929, police raided the clinic taking records, equipment, and arrested Dr. Hannah Stone, the director of the clinic, as well as four other staff members. Later a judge dismissed the case because there was not enough sufficient evidence. After Margaret Sanger died in 1966, Bill Clinton (the president 29 years after the death of Margaret Sanger) declared the clinic a National Historic Landmark.
